Clever things to do in Riga
Marvel at Art Nouveau Architecture
Stroll down Alberta Iela and Elizabetes Iela to witness some of Europe's most striking Art Nouveau façades. Each building is a flamboyant masterpiece, adorned with intricate carvings, mythical creatures, and elaborate floral motifs.
Explore Riga Central Market
Housed in former Zeppelin hangars, this enormous market is a sensory overload of fresh produce, smoked fish, pickled delights, and local cheeses. It’s a fantastic place to observe daily life and pick up some delicious souvenirs.
Visit the House of the Blackheads
Admire the meticulously reconstructed guild house of the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a stunning example of Dutch Gothic architecture. Its ornate façade and opulent interiors tell tales of medieval merchant life and festive gatherings.
Ascend St. Peter's Church Tower
For the most impressive panoramic views of Riga’s Old Town, the Daugava River, and beyond, take the elevator up St. Peter's Church tower. The patchwork of red roofs and distant spires makes for a truly memorable vista.
Experience Latvian National Opera
Catch a world-class opera or ballet performance at the grand Latvian National Opera and Ballet building. The neo-classical architecture is impressive, and tickets are often more affordable than in other European capitals.
Wander through Kalnciema Quarter
Head across the river to Kalnciema Quarter, a beautifully restored complex of wooden houses that hosts artisan markets, open-air concerts, and art exhibitions, particularly lively on Saturdays. It's a charming slice of authentic Riga away from the main tourist drag.
Contemplate the Freedom Monument
Pay your respects at the colossal Freedom Monument, a poignant symbol of Latvia's independence. Standing tall at the edge of the Old Town, it’s a powerful reminder of the nation’s enduring spirit and resilience.
Sample Riga Black Balsam
Dare to try Riga Black Balsam, a potent, herbaceous liqueur often served neat or mixed with coffee or cranberry juice. You can find it in many bars and restaurants, but a traditional tasting at Black Magic Bar is an experience in itself.

Know before you go
Late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) offers pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the city at its most appealing. Summers are warm and bring long daylight hours, perfect for al fresco dining, but can be busier.
The most straightforward and cost-effective way from Riga International Airport (RIX) to the city centre is the local Bus 22. It departs frequently, takes about 30 minutes, and drops you near the Old Town for just a few euros.
For traditional Latvian fare without breaking the bank, seek out a Lido restaurant (there's a large one near the Central Market). For something more contemporary or quirky, explore the cafes and eateries around Miera Iela or Bergs Bazaar.
Take advantage of the excellent public transport system; e-tickets are cheaper when bought in advance from Narvesen kiosks. Also, many restaurants offer a 'dienas piedāvājums' (daily special lunch) which provides a fantastic, affordable meal.
For a truly unique perspective, rent a small boat or paddleboard on the City Canal and Daugava River. You'll glide past parks and historic buildings, offering a peaceful and distinct view of the city, especially during sunset.
