Split Airport (SPU) is about 25km from the city centre. The most economical way is the airport shuttle bus, which drops you right by the Riva. Taxis and Uber are readily available but significantly pricier; agree on a fare beforehand if using a local taxi.
For authentic Dalmatian flavours, head to a 'konoba' – a traditional tavern. Konoba Varos and Konoba Fetivi in the Varoš neighbourhood serve exquisite local dishes like 'pašticada' (braised beef). For fresher-than-fresh seafood, seek out restaurants near the Peškarija fish market.
Ditch the fancy restaurants on the Riva for lunch and instead grab a 'burek' (flaky pastry with various fillings) from a local bakery or a 'marenda' (local snack) from the Pazar. Buying local wine or beer from a supermarket rather than a bar will also save you a few quid.
Instead of joining the main tour groups for a day trip to the islands, head to the local ferry port (Trajektna Luka) and hop on a regular Jadrolinija ferry to Brač or Šolta. It's much cheaper, offers a genuine local experience, and you can explore at your own pace.
