Lambourn, often called the "Valley of the Racehorse," is a historic village in West Berkshire renowned as a major centre for horse racing in England. Its roots stretch back to Anglo-Saxon times, with mentions in King Alfred the Great's will.
Ancient Burial Mounds
Just above Upper Lambourn are the Seven Barrows, a prehistoric cemetery with over thirty Bronze Age burial mounds. The nearby Long Barrow dates to around 4000 BCE, making it 2,000 years older than the other barrows.
River Lambourn's Name
The village's name likely derives from the River Lambourn, a winterbourne that flows through the area, with its meaning thought to refer to the dipping of lambs in the river.
Horse Racing Heritage
Lambourn has been a fashionable training centre for racehorses since the 18th century, with its well-drained, spongy grass and open downs providing ideal conditions. It is now second only to Newmarket as the largest centre for racehorse training in England.
