Customer Referral Schemes That Actually Work

The Power of a Great Referral
A lead from a referral is worth its weight in gold. It comes with a built-in layer of trust that you simply can't buy with advertising. When a friend, colleague, or family member recommends a business, we listen. The new customer arrives pre-sold on your quality and reliability, making the sales process shorter and easier.
But waiting for referrals to happen by chance is not a strategy. A formal referral scheme encourages and rewards your happy customers for spreading the word, turning a trickle of new business into a consistent flow.
Rule 1: Make the Reward Worthwhile
The biggest reason referral schemes fail is a weak incentive. A measly 5% discount isn't going to motivate anyone to act. The reward needs to be genuinely appealing to both the referrer (your existing customer) and the referred (the new customer). This is called a two-sided incentive.
Consider what your customers would truly value. For a high-value service like building work, a £100 John Lewis voucher for the referrer and £100 off the project for their friend is a powerful motivator. For a regular service like window cleaning, a free clean for both parties works brilliantly. The reward should feel generous, not tokenistic.
Rule 2: Make it Incredibly Easy to Do
Don't make your customers jump through hoops. The process should be effortless. Complicated forms, unique codes they have to remember, or a long list of terms and conditions will kill your scheme stone dead. The best systems are the simplest.
Give your customers a simple link they can share. When their friend clicks the link and makes an enquiry, the referral is tracked automatically. Or, even simpler, just tell them: 'Ask your friend to mention your name when they book, and you'll both get your reward.' Remove every possible point of friction.
Rule 3: Promote it at the Right Time
When is the best time to ask for a referral? The moment of maximum happiness. This is usually right after you've completed the work and the customer is delighted with the result. This is your golden window of opportunity.
Make it part of your job completion process. When you send the final invoice or a follow-up email to check they're happy, include a simple, clear message about your referral programme. Something like: 'We're so glad you're happy with the work. We grow our business through recommendations, so if you know anyone else who could use our help, we'd be delighted to offer both you and your friend a £50 voucher as a thank you.'
Managing Referrals Simply with ashdub
Keeping track of who referred whom can quickly become a headache. The ashdub CRM makes this simple. You can add a custom field to each customer's record to note who referred them. This allows you to easily see who your best advocates are and ensure they always get their reward promptly.
You can also use ashdub's email tools to automate the 'ask'. Create a template that gets sent out a week after a job is marked as 'complete', thanking the customer and explaining your referral offer. It systemises the process, ensuring you never miss an opportunity to generate high-quality, low-cost leads.
