What you need to know
Major car hire counters are located in the arrivals area of the international terminal and on the ground floor of the domestic terminal's multi-level car park. Some providers offer a shuttle to off-site depots.
New Zealand has very few toll roads. The main ones near Auckland are part of the Northern Gateway Toll Road (SH1) and the Tauranga Eastern Link. You can pay online or the hire company will manage it for a small fee.
Outside of the main centres, many roads are single-lane each way and can be winding. Always allow extra time for your journey, pull over to let faster traffic pass, and be aware of one-lane bridges.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for New Zealand?
You can drive on your valid UK driving licence for up to 12 months. You do not need an IDP if your licence is in English. You must carry your licence with you at all times when driving.
Can I take my hire car on the ferry to the South Island?
Most car hire companies allow this, but you must check their specific policy. You will need to book the car onto the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry yourself. Some companies may require you to drop off a car and pick up a new one.
