Emergency
Something wrong right now?
Do the safe things first. Then ask for a call-back and the electrician will tell you what happens next.
Safe first steps
Before anyone arrives.
If someone has had a shock
Don't touch them while they may still be in contact with the supply. Call 999.
Burning smell, scorching or sparking
Switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the fitting.
No power at all
Check whether neighbours have power too — if not, it may be a power cut: call 105.
Don't reset repeatedly
If a switch keeps tripping, leave it off and tell the electrician which one.
Hours and replies
When emergency requests are answered.
Electrician to confirm: the hours emergency call-backs are taken and how quickly you can usually expect one.
Emergency call-back
Three short steps. The electrician calls back on the number you give.
- 1. You
- 2. The fault
- 3. Check
